Living in North Ogden, Utah

by Jim Vaughan

North Ogden sits at the foot of Ben Lomond Peak on the northern Wasatch Front, about three miles north of downtown Ogden. Washington Boulevard (State Route 235) runs right through town, and the mountain fills the view from almost every street. With about 21,700 residents (U.S. Census Bureau, 2025 estimate), North Ogden is close to Ogden's jobs, shopping and services, with the mountains right behind it.

If you're thinking about moving here, this guide covers the schools, the outdoors, the commute and the traditions that shape everyday life in North Ogden.

A Town with Orchard Roots

Settlers arrived in the winter of 1850, and North Ogden incorporated as a city on February 1, 1934. Fruit growing shaped the early economy: the North Ogden Fruit Exchange, founded in 1924, was the region's first fruit cooperative. That history lives on in the city's best-known tradition, Cherry Days, which began in the 1930s as a Fourth of July celebration.

Areas of Town

North Ogden's General Plan divides the city into four areas. Old Town is the original pioneer street grid. Coldwater is the more rural east side. The Hillside sits on the slopes below Ben Lomond. Southtown is around 1900 North. Each has a different feel, from older homes on traditional streets to newer view homes on the bench.

Schools

North Ogden is in Weber School District. A. Parley Bates, Green Acres and North Ogden elementary schools and North Ogden Junior High (the Knights) are inside the city. Majestic Elementary in Harrisville also serves part of North Ogden, and depending on address, some students attend Orion Junior High in Harrisville. Weber High School (the Warriors), just west in Pleasant View, serves North Ogden. Boundaries can change, so always confirm a home's assigned schools on the Weber School District boundary maps.

The Mountains at Your Doorstep

North Ogden is one of the closest cities on the Wasatch Front to high-country trails. North Ogden Canyon Road climbs to the North Ogden Divide trailhead at about 6,200 feet. From there, the Skyline Trail runs north 8.2 miles to Ben Lomond Peak (9,716 feet) and south 5.5 miles to Lewis Peak. Closer to town, the Bonneville Shoreline Trail runs 2.4 miles along the foothills from the Divide to Coldwater Canyon. Past the Divide, the same road drops into the Ogden Valley toward Liberty and Pineview Reservoir.

"The Major" Over Coldwater Canyon

Each November, a 150-by-78-foot American flag hangs above Coldwater Canyon for about two weeks. The Major Brent Taylor Foundation flies it to honor veterans and Major Brent Taylor, North Ogden's mayor, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2018 while serving with the Utah National Guard. Thousands of people hike up to see it each year, and it has become one of the community's most meaningful traditions.

Summer in North Ogden

Cherry Days fills North Ogden Park each summer. In 2026 it ran June 27 through July 4, with a parade, car show, rodeo, carnival and fireworks. The North Shore Aquatic Center at 2480 North 200 East is an outdoor summer pool with a lazy river, waterslide and splash pad. At Bicentennial Park, The Stump has offered free artesian well water for generations, and Lomond View Park has four lighted pickleball courts.

Getting Around

Downtown Ogden is about three miles south on Washington Boulevard, where Ogden Central Station is the nearest FrontRunner stop. North Ogden has no freeway interchange of its own, so drivers take 2700 North west to I-15. Hill Air Force Base is about 25–30 minutes away, depending on which gate you use, which makes North Ogden a practical choice for military buyers and civilian base employees.

Who North Ogden Fits
