Living in Farr West, Utah

by Jim Vaughan

From Sugar Beets to a City of Its Own

Joseph Taylor settled in what is now Farr West in 1858. For decades the area was part of Harrisville. In 1890 its western half became a separate LDS ward, named for pioneer leaders Lorin Farr and Chauncy W. West. Sugar beets, introduced in 1898, were the early cash crop, and families later added dairy and poultry farms. Residents wanted their own voice in local planning, and Farr West began operating as a city on January 1, 1981, the twelfth city in Weber County. It has grown from about 2,200 residents in 1990 to about 8,160 today.

Schools

Farr West is in Weber School District. Farr West Elementary sits on 2700 North, and Silver Ridge Elementary serves the north part of the city. Wahlquist Junior High is in Farr West, and Fremont High School is nearby in Plain City. Boundaries can change, so always confirm a home's assigned schools on the Weber School District boundary maps.

Smith Family Park and City Parks

Smith Family Park at 2441 W 4000 N is the city's showpiece. It has a fishing pond, a zip line, a playground, pickleball and basketball courts, a riding arena, walking and biking paths, and large and small pavilions. Farr West also maintains four other parks:

  • Mountain View Park (1500 N 1700 W): pavilion, playground, open lawn and a walking path
  • Farr West Park (2090 N 2000 W): pavilion, playground and a baseball diamond
  • Civic Center Park (1896 N 1800 W), next to City Hall
  • North/Jackson Park (2565 W 3300 N)

Parks are open from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset. Restrooms are open from late April through early October.

Recreation Center and Golf

The Farr West Recreation Center at 1896 N 1800 W, next to City Hall, has a gym, a basketball court, a workout room and pickleball open play, and it handles sign-ups for youth sports. Golfers have Remuda Golf Course at 2600 W 3500 N, an 18-hole, par-72 course.

The Freedom Festival

Each summer Farr West celebrates the Fourth of July with its Freedom Festival at Smith Family, Farr West and Mountain View parks. Recent schedules have included a golf tournament at Remuda, a pickleball tournament, a park-to-park bike ride, a July 4th 5K, parade and breakfast, and fireworks.

Homes and Neighborhoods

Most Farr West homes are single-family. Established neighborhoods include Remuda, Miya Meadows and Happy Days. Newer construction includes Hart Estates and the Legends Crossing townhomes, both by Visionary Homes.

Getting Around

I-15 exit 349 at 2700 North connects Farr West to the freeway, and residents average about 21 minutes to work. The drive to Hill Air Force Base is about 20 to 25 minutes, depending on the gate you use. If you're stationed at Hill, I'm glad to time the drive from any home to your gate. Some Farr West mailing addresses say "Ogden," so I always confirm which city a home is actually in.

Who Farr West Fits

Farr West offers established single-family neighborhoods, new townhomes and quick freeway access. That makes it a fit for first-time buyers, growing families moving up, downsizers, and families relocating on PCS orders to Hill Air Force Base. Comparing nearby cities?
